When people speak of the “Cloud,” they envision a clean, environmentally friendly technology. However, the “dirty” little secret is that the Cloud is nothing more than massive data centers scattered across the globe, consuming enormous amounts of energy and spewing hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 (GHG) into the environment annually. The Cloud data center industry is exploding worldwide, and therefore energy consumption is increasing at an alarming rate. Studies predict an annual growth rate of 20 – 30% in electricity consumption. Because of this growth, the issue of carbon emissions mitigation will rapidly become more urgent.
